What a powerful thought! It shows a strong identity and confidence.
The first time I heard it was from a friend of mine turning forties. Her boyfriend, a man from a very different culture of her, and my friend have been dating for the last three years. She says: "in this moment of my life, I allow myself to do what I really want to do; I don't care of people's opinions. I know that we are different, but my goal is living in the present and finding commonalities. I better know myself with someone else. Giving him time and space, I feel grounded."
The second time I heard it was from a friend of mine who has been traveling for three weeks. I talked with him on the phone and asked him about his trip. He told me very excited that he met a young couple from Colombia in their early twenties. The guy told him that being in a relationship makes him better known himself. My friend was surprised about the young couple maturity and he strongly transmitted me the powerful emotion on the phone.
Many couples' goal is sharing the journey, having fun, not being alone, maybe even making a lovely family. When the goal is all of these and knowing yourself better through the eyes of the beloved one is a powerful feeling. In my opinion, it shows tenderness, confidence, and a strong personality.
It is true that knowing yourself is important to all your relationships and the better you know yourself, the better the relationship. It is also true that you build our identity through the eyes of others and you are going to learn far more about yourself through your relationship with your beloved one.
